Vantage WA Supports Youth Development With Quarter Midget Youth Speedway Project

Vantage WA is proud to support the Quarter Midget Youth Speedway Project (QMYSP) and the skill development of the youth involved.

Quarter midget racing is a motorsport event where competitors race in a formula 125 car, which is a quarter of the size of a full midget car. The QMYSP predominately races at Narrogin Speedway and provides racers with the opportunity to race at other tracks around WA, including state titles once a year.

Established in 1998, the QMYSP encourages and supports youth development skills in self-reliance, teamwork, important driver education and more. The QMYSP is an excellent club for the whole family, where youths between the ages of 10 and 17 have the opportunity to race across the state in one of the formula 125 cars.

Brendon O’Farrell of Vantage WA’s Perth branch has been involved with the QMYSP since 2018. His son, Jacob, has been successfully racing with the club for a number of years.

“My highlights during these seasons,” says Jacob, “are coming first at the Formula 125 feature night held in February last year at Albany, coming fourth in the state title at Albany in February 2020, coming first on a wet track in Mount Barker and racing every month at my home track in Narrogin.”

While Jacob finds racing fulfilling, he enjoys many other aspects of being involved with the Quarter Midget Youth Speedway Project.

“Apart from racing and driving the cars at high speed on the different tracks, I enjoy working on the cars, helping other drivers fix their cars, making new friends and taking part in fundraising events,” Jacob says.

All the cars feature full safety roll cages and driver restraints. Each driver is provided with full safety gear including a helmet, gloves, race suit and boots and is expected to participate in first aid, fire and safety, and drug and alcohol awareness courses.

Vantage WA assists with the maintenance of the cars and ensures the best standard of safety equipment and spare parts for the formula 125 cars. Vantage WA’s support enables the QMYPS to purchase new safety gear, including new helmets, gloves, seat belts and spare parts for club members.

“Having the support of Vantage WA is great for the club. It means that the club can participate in races around the state, with safe and reliable cars.” Says Brendon.

Vantage WA has been supporting the QMYPS for four seasons and we are looking forward to continuing our support for the future growth of this fantastic program.
